Marahau Valley Earth HouseW002

  • Year2021

Four parallel local rock and adobe walls emerge like geological fault lines creating architectural space that echoes the colour, shape, and atmosphere of the surrounding landscape. Aligning with views up and down the valley, the massive earth walls modulate the temperature of the home throughout the year, protecting it from the heat of summer and acting as a thermal battery during cooler months.

A spacious two bedroom second home for a couple designed to accommodate their four adult children—and future grandkids—during short stays, art, meditation remote work, and a large wardrobe, guided by Feng Shui principles while also responding to the geology, climate, and idyllic beauty of the Marahau Valley and adjacent Abel Tasman National Park.
