Free School of Architecture was founded in Los Angeles in 2017. Unhappy with the direction of the school and its leadership, the student body took over the school at halfway. In 2018, four women (and former students) from four different cities coordinated a re-imagined school, one that sought to destabilize the typical language, format and hierarchies embedded in architecture schools, practice and the discipline as a whole. The tuition-free, participant-lead program took place over six weeks and attracted over 60 participants from 23 countries and a wide range of disciplines. It became not just an experiment in what it means to be a school, but an urban exploration of a city via design workshops and place-based knowledge sharing.
FSA 2018 was imagined, designed, and organised by Lili Carr, Karina Andreeva, Elisha Cohen and Tessa Forde, and enlivened by its many participants and contributors including Simon Glaister and Leonard Hobbins.
