Claycore Canopy brings the power of natural building materials to the concrete jungle of the city centre, with an installation that uses a light-weight earthen brick recipe of clay, hemp hurd, and paper pulp, in new and exciting way.
Humans have lived on clay floors, in buildings made of clay walls and clay bricks for tens of thousands of years. Despite these materials largely disappearing from our homes and other spaces in Aotearoa, they have enormous potential to be reintroduced. Clay is non-toxic, stores and releases heat, manages humidity and is an abundant resource that can be rescued from waste cycles and re-used or returned to the ground. Combined with current and future technologies, clay-based building materials point a way forward.
Claymore Canopy was a feet of collective organising and labour built with the help of more than 100 people: our family, friends, colleagues, students, and the pre:fab community.
Claymore Canopy was later exhibited at Material Acts. An exhibition at Objectspace in November 2025
